Providing a safe, nurturing and stimulating environment that enables young women from diverse backgrounds to achieve academic success in a college preparatory program and to become leaders in their communities and professions.
Hawthorn is the first school of its kind, an all-girls’ public charter school offering all St. Louis families the opportunity to choose a single-sex school for their middle and high school daughters. Hawthorn provides young women with the academic background, self-esteem, and leadership skills that will enable them to succeed in college and beyond.
As the only public all-girls school in Missouri, funding from The Dana Brown Charitable Trust is hugely beneficial to the education of young women in our region. Hawthorn provides middle and high school girls a high quality, college preparatory education with a particular focus on STEM (science, technology, engineering and math). In some ways, The Dana Brown Charitable Trust helped put the “E’ in STEM for Hawthorn, as grant funding supported The Hawthorn School for Girls with expenses associated with their Engineering classroom, specifically teacher’s salaries.
Hawthorn opened in 2015 with 120 6th and 7th grade girls. The school will add a new sixth grade each school year until 2020 when they will be fully enrolled with approximately 450 girls in 6th – 12th grades, all of whom will directly benefit from The Dana Brown Charitable Trust’s contribution to their engineering education.
